Dear
Friends and Supporters,
Here is Iowa PSR's first electronic newsletter. We will continue
publishing our printed newsletter for members, but felt the need to
develop something for the many supporters who are electronically
connected. We hope the two formats will be complementary. Let
us know what you think.
March 19. 2008 marks the beginning of what will be the sixth year of an
illegal war based on false premises. The civilian death
toll has been horrendous and four million Iraqis are
refugees.. Nearly 4000
U.S. soldiers have been killed and more than seven times as many
wounded. The financial cost is staggering, at at a time of
unprecedented national debt. The fifth anniversary of a war with
still no end in sight and with grievous consequences that will extend
beyond our lifetimes is an opportunity to speak out. Please check
some of the links and resources we have in this e-newsletter.
Of course the war in Iraq is not the only problem facing us. PSR
is working to meet the two greatest health threats facing
mankind: Global warming and nuclear weapons. Burning fossil
fuels and continuing to use nuclear power and maintain an immense
nuclear arsenal both contribute to the toxic degradation of the
planet Please, whatever else you do this month, send a
loud-and-clear message
in as many ways as possible to your colleagues, neighbors, fellow citizens, and elected officials:
end the war, end the
occupation, end fossil fuel addiction, and advance an alternative
energy
revolution through renewables, efficiency, and conservation.
Check out
the events, ideas, and resources linked in this e-newsletter.
Surely one or
more will prove inspiring! Together we can save this planet for
our
children and future generations. In the end, it’s the only one we
have!
You can
always go the the Iowa PSR web site www.iowa-psr.org
to see about upcoming events and learn more about Iowa PSR
projects. The national PSR web site www.psr.org
has the latest on PSR national programs including the Code
Black program.on the multiple dangers of continuing to rely on
burning coal for power generation.

IOWA LAWMAKERS ARE TRYING TO EXPAND NUCLEAR POWER IN IOWA
A bill has moved from subcommittee to the full Iowa House Commerce Committee February 29. The plan is to offer multi-million dollar grants to companies to build new nuclear power plants in Iowa. ( Full article should be available through 4/1/08. Article is on lower left. Click on article to enlarge.)
If you're against a resurgence of nuclear power in Iowa, consider contacting your Iowa House representative, especially if she or he is on the Iowa House Commerce Committee.
We need 12 votes to sink this bill. This is "funnel week" in the General Assembly. If a bill is not out of committe by March 7, it is dead for the year.
Contact your state representative to the Iowa General Assembly and give your opinion. The Commerce Committee members are listed at: Iowa House Commerce Committee Member List
To find your District go to the list of Iowa Districts. Once you arrive at this page you can click on any column of the table to sort entries by that column.
