In Memory of Number 3000

On December 31, 2006 the 3000th U.S. soldier was killed in Iraq.  December exceeded October as the most lethal month for US troops in Iraq.
3000 KIA Yard sign in Iowa City at the end of December 2006.

A Song Forever Stilled

Bump! A loud thump,
Against the window pane.
You’ve heard it before,
You know what you will find.
A dead bird, a warbler.
A song forever stilled.

Is this what it sounds like
In your war torn town,
When the bombs hit,
And your songs are gone,
Forever stilled ... forever.
Is this the price we ask?

The price for freedom ,
Democracy, victory?
The price to win our war, which
Like all wars ever waged
Is payed by those who have no say
And will never sing again

Ode to Number 2000, October 25, 2005

EWO
2000 KIA by October 25, 2005
Sorry, I'm Busy . . .
The young, the poor, the average guys are called upon to die.
And what of you, the leadership? You didn’t even try.
That’s the story of our race, of kings who’ve gone before,
Of wealthy men, their kith and kin, and governmental types.
And those of us who were deferred, to serve another time,
We owe a lot, and can’t repay the price that you have payed,
And yet you served with honor, and never felt betrayed.
Betrayed you were by those of us who stood in silence by
And failed to see the treachery of those we chose on high.
The ones who said the war is over, more troops you will not need,
The armor, it’s for bigger wars, to fight another time.
Cool it guys, we’ll pay the price, and sadly it is you.
But thanks so much, you bought the ranch, and oil, and lots of crude.
We’ll all enjoy it here at home, far from all the muck,
When home they send the body bags, have someone pick them up,
’Cause we’re too busy on the ranch and drivin’ in our truck.
