Peace Week, March 24-28, 2008, Iowa City

Around the country, people are working hard to have a large turnout in DC on March 19, it is also necessary to be visible and vocal in our local communities on that day. Congress will not be in session and so our representatives and senators will be in their home districts/states. We are aiming to have at least one action in each of the 435 congressional districts. We encourage those who are not able to make it to DC on March 19 to organize and participate in local actions. These events will vary in location and character -- some will be vigils, others civil disobedience actions, some will be held at congressional offices, others in town squares -- but they will all be tied to the actions in Washington and sending the same message to the policy makers: It is time to end this war and occupation!

Healing Iraq: A Tale of Two Doctors - March 26th at 7:00pm in Northwestern Rm. in IMU
We are showing this award winning documentary, followed by a discussion with our local producer focused on health and human rights impacts of war.

Coal-Fired Power Plants in Iowa, January 16 & 17, 2008:

A new Iowa poll shows that Iowans want an energy policy that safeguards our grand children's future, not cheap short-term fixes with devastating long-term consequences.  Iowas have the vision and common sense to see the economic opportunity in alternative energy, efficiency, and conservation that keep our communities and our world healthy and sustainable.

YOU ARE INVITED

Plains Justice, Environmental Advocates, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Sierra Club
invite you to meet these six experts:
  • Dr. James Hansen, Director, Gloddard Institute for Space Studies, NASA and University of Iowa graduate (speaking as a private citizen)

  • Tom Sanzillo, Former New York State First Deputy Comptroller
  • Scudder Parker, Independent Consultant in sustainable energy
  • Dr. Kristen Welker-Hood, Director of Environment & Health Programs, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Washington DC
  • Dr. Ezra D. Hausman, Synapse Energy Economics

Plains Justice Logo
Plains Justice is an environmental justice law center based in Cedar Rapids.  Our founding in 2006 was in part a response to a national rush to build 150+ coal burning power plants, the biggest industrial source of global warming gases.  Forty-two plants have been proposed in the Midwest alone.  We have had some great successes as we challenge proposed plants in:

Waterloo and Marshalltown, Iowa
Big Stone City, South Dakota
Gascoyne and South Hearth, North Dakota
Finding alternatives to coal plants means working hard to create solutions.  Our new Clean Energy Ambassador project for example, will help small utilities improve their bottom line by implementing proven, cost-effective energy efficiency programs that lower bills.

This is a real fight to safeguard our grand children's future.
The health and sustainability of our communities and our world are at stake.
Stand with us as we work for truly clean energy,
not short-sighted fixes with disastrous long-term consequences.

Special Guest this month:  Ma Thida

MA THIDA (fiction writer, physician, activist; b. 1966, Burma) was in medical school when Burma’s military junta shut down the universities.  She then served as a health care provider as well as an editor for the non-violent National League for Democracy. Her many short stories containing disguised criticism of the Burmese government led to six years in solitary confinement, without access to reading or writing materials.  In 1999 she was pardoned and released on humanitarian grounds She is now the editor of a youth magazine as well as a surgeon at the Muslim Free Hospital, which treats poor patients at no cost. Writing Sample.

In addition to the business meeting, if time permits, we will screen a 30-minute video "Nuclear Deception" produced by NPRI that has highlights from the September 2004 NPRI and PSR sponsored program in Chicago on nuclear power and children's health.
